I was sad to leave my favourite city of Angels, but excited at the same time to start our big adventure on the road. We got some water and snacks for the road, packed our suitcases and left our lovely Airbnb house to start 245 miles drive to San Simeon. To get the best experience you should leave from Santa Monica and take route 101, which is a highway that goes along the Pacific Ocean all the way up to San Francisco. Here is the list of locations that I recommend to stop at (in that order):
Santa Barbara: Californian heaven, probably the most beautiful city in California. Loads of beautiful flowers and Spanish style white buildings. Loads of awesome pics guaranteed. Spend an hour or so wondering around beautiful little streets and squares and then grab a burger from “The Habbit Burger grill” and head towards the ocean to enjoy your lunch with a beautiful view.
Ostrich Land: I have never seen anything like this before, it is an actual ostrich farm where you pay $4 for entrance and $1 for food and then you can go and feet 8-9 foot Ostriches and Emus. It was the first time I saw these animals so up close and oh, well they are scary and the whole place is just like a Jurassic park- all that sounds. This is definitely necessary do thing on your route and it is so cheap too.
Prismo Beach: A classic beach town located half way between LA and San Francisco. Those long white beaches are perfect for a nice afternoon stroll to stretch your legs and take same great pictures in the sunset.
Morro Bay: Working fishing village and official home to Morro Rock. It’s a really quiet and calm town, there is no such thing as traffic in Morro Bay, unless, of course, you count birds, sea mammals, and fish! This is a perfect place to grab some dinner and watch the sunset before heading to the motel near San Simeon.
San Simeon: Another, beach town with beautiful beaches and sights of seals. It is the closest town to the Herts Castle, so a great location to spend a night after a long day on the road. We have stayed at Silver Surf Motel, which was pretty clean, in the convenient location and super cheap. Only tip I have there, do not eat at the diner nearby, all the food is microwaved, very poor hygiene and overall the atmosphere is not great- we felt like we were in old American murder movie.
